A quiet Dar es salaam evening settles over a home veranda, where family has gathered the way family does; unhurried, unbothered, entirely at ease. Tea is poured. Conversation moves at its own pace. The last light of the day holds everything in a warmth that feels less like weather and more like belonging. This is the kibaraza (veranda), not simply a structure but a living institution of Swahili life. It is where elders speak and the young listen, where advice is passed like tea from one hand to another, where the weight of the day is set down and shared. Kibarazani finds its subject here, in this ordinary sacred space, and asks the viewer to stay a while. Through vibrant brushwork and a palette soaked in the golds and ambers of twilight, the work documents something I see slowly receding from the modern landscape: the unhurried togetherness of intergenerational life. The figures are not posed; they are simply present, gathered in the collective ease that only home can hold. It is a quiet protest against the isolation of contemporary living, rendered not in anger but in warmth. “I see it as my responsibility to preserve our culture. The kibaraza is where advice is given, suggestions are made, and our history is whispered from one heart to another.” By freezing this moment in time, Kibarazani invites the viewer to slow down to acknowledge the vital, vanishing art of simply being together.
